Messages of Support for the Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre from Queen's Senior Administration

The Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre (DDQIC) began as the Queen's Innovation Connector, a joint effort by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Smith School of Business in 2012. DDQIC?is now under the purview of the Provost's office to reflect its pan-university mandate, but continues to?receive?support from its founding faculties.?

A Message from the Queen's University?Provost:Benoit Antoine Bacon

Innovators and entrepreneurs are special people who, through creativity, hard work and courage, develop ideas and products that contribute to our economy and our society. At Queen’s, we are committed to providing our entrepreneurs with optimal conditions towards success, and to develop the next generation of innovative leaders. Indeed, growing entrepreneurship on-campus and in the community is a key pillar of Queen’s Strategic Mandate Agreement with the Ontario provincial government.?The Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre?builds on existing strengths to give students access to the resources, the networks, and the mentors to help transform the students’ ideas into products and services. ?A core strength of DDQIC is its interdisciplinary nature, which provides students from across the university with the opportunity to work in diverse teams to address important problems and identify the solutions that will yield benefits not only for our region, but nationally and globally too.

Elspeth MurrayA Message from the?Kimberly WoodhouseDeans:

From the Deans of?the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Smith School of Business, the Founding Faculties of the Queen's Innovation Connector

Like every great idea, the Queen’s Innovation Connector started small. Twenty-one exceptional engineering and commerce students spent four months honing their innovation skills with the help of Queen’s faculty and alumni in the 2012 Queen’s Summer Innovation Initiative.

The Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre is about fostering that same spirit of initiative campus-wide. Now, students from every Queen’s faculty and school have the opportunity explore their innovative and entrepreneurial spirit through joint courses, events, and facilities such as SparQ Labs. We’ve launched a new Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation degree program and are forging connections with alumni, entrepreneurs, business leaders and local economic development agencies to facilitate the exchange of ideas, talent and opportunities to benefit our region and country. And we’re uniting existing resources at Queen’s such as PARTEQ and Queen's Business Law Clinic?to provide support and resources to help students take their innovations to market. ?

It started as a partnership between a great engineering faculty and?business school. The benefits of putting together teams of diverse students quickly caught the attention of the entire campus community. Now a pan-university initiative, DDQIC has supported the entrepreneurial and innovative aspirations of students from virtually every faculty and school. We’re also working in partnership with St.?Lawrence College and have piloted our international program with Makerere University in Uganda.?
