Available Expert - Uber covers up data hack of 57 million users

Queen's University security and surveillance expert David Murakami Wood is available to comment on an international breach of the personal information of 57 million Uber customers that the company attempted to conceal.

“The Uber hack shows that the so-called sharing economy is all too often a way of fast-tracking our data not just to marketers, but also to criminals,” says Dr. Murakami Wood. “Uber not only had such poor security practices that they lost the data of 57 million customers and drivers, but they also paid out larger amounts of money to cover up this betrayal of trust.”

“At the same time, this is the company that is asking cities across Canada and the world to trust them and free them from the regulations that other taxi companies have to meet,” he says. “We should now be asking what is the basis for trusting Uber with anything?”
